Bridging Essay and Poetry I began English writing with poetry in Oct.'97, and next, stepped to essay just one year later Oct.'98. In poem writing, I think inspiration is most important. It falls to me all of a sudden: when I happen to feel a wind, when I happen to see a leaf drift, when I happen to find the meaning of words such as "green", "wallaby", and "lady". After I warm and grow these inspirations in my heart, I put them into words. This is the moment when my new poem is born. I arrange a few spicy words rather than lots of flat words, leaving part of interpretation to my readers. On the other hand, I know essay requires a topic. After finding a theme, I organize it into a structure with some logic in my mind for a few days, that is, hours of brain storm. Once I decide to start, I face my powerful assistant, word processor, I roll up my sleeves, take a deep breath, and tackle my new essay. In the both creations, revising words and restructuring sentences are fun. Playing with words is so enjoyable that makes me unconscious of time, even my housework. If you allow my boldness to consider myself a poet and essayist, here in this first collection of my essays, you have probably enjoyed my individual experiment to bridge essay and poetry. My struggle has gone. Sweet satisfaction has been realized with the last period, another dawn in my writing, on Jan. 22,'99. |
